Memorial Volume in Honor of Gad Hetsroni
This memorial volume is dedicated to the memory of Gad Hetsroni, a distinguished professor of mechanical engineering at the Technion - Israel Institute of Technology. Professor Hetsroni passed away on May 20, 2020, at the age of 76. He was a world-renowned expert in fluid mechanics, heat transfer, and solid mechanics, and his research had a major impact on these fields.
Professor Hetsroni was born in Israel in 1944. He received his B.Sc. degree in mechanical engineering from the Technion in 1966, and his M.Sc. and Ph.D. degrees in mechanical engineering from the University of California, Berkeley, in 1968 and 1971, respectively. He joined the Technion faculty in 1971, and served as head of the Department of Mechanical Engineering from 1988 to 1992.

Professor Hetsroni's research interests included fluid mechanics, heat transfer, and solid mechanics. He made significant contributions to the understanding of turbulence, multiphase flow, and heat transfer in porous media. He also developed new methods for the analysis and design of thermal systems. His work has been published in over 200 journal papers and conference proceedings, and he has authored or co-authored four books.
Professor Hetsroni was a Fellow of the American Society of Mechanical Engineers (ASME) and the American Physical Society (APS). He was also a member of the National Academy of Engineering (NAE) and the Israel Academy of Sciences and Humanities. He received numerous awards for his research, including the ASME Heat Transfer Memorial Award in 2005 and the APS Fluid Dynamics Prize in 2010.
Professor Hetsroni was a dedicated teacher and mentor. He supervised over 50 graduate students and postdoctoral fellows, many of whom have gone on to become successful researchers and engineers. He was also a passionate advocate for the promotion of science and engineering education in Israel.
Professor Hetsroni was a kind and generous person, who was always willing to help others. He was a true friend and colleague, and he will be deeply missed by all who knew him.
