The Tauber Institute for the Study of European Jewry at Brandeis University is one of the leading centers for the study of European Jewish history and culture. Founded in 1966, the Institute is home to a world-renowned faculty and staff, as well as a rich collection of archival materials and rare books. The Institute's mission is to promote the study of European Jewry in all its aspects, from the Middle Ages to the present day. Through its research, teaching, and public programs, the Institute seeks to contribute to a deeper understanding of the Jewish experience in Europe and its impact on world history.

One of the most important figures in the history of European Jewry is Rabbi Judah Aryeh Leib Alter of Ger (1740-1803). Alter was a prominent rabbi, mystic, and leader of the Hasidic movement. Born in Poland, Alter studied under some of the leading rabbis of his time. He eventually became the rabbi of the town of Ger, where he founded a large and influential Hasidic community. Alter was known for his charismatic personality, his deep spirituality, and his commitment to social justice. He was also a prolific writer, and his works on Hasidic theology and mysticism continue to be studied by scholars today.
