The Tauber Institute for the Study of European Jewry at Brandeis University is one of the leading centers for the study of European Jewish history and culture. The Tauber Institute has a long history of studying the life and work of Rabbi Judah Aryeh Leib Alter of Ger. In 1973, the Institute published a major collection of Alter's writings, entitled The Teachings of Rabbi Judah Aryeh Leib Alter of Ger. This volume includes translations of some of Alter's most important works, as well as an by Professor Arthur Green, one of the world's leading scholars of Hasidism. The Tauber Institute has also sponsored numerous conferences and lectures on Alter's life and work. In 2003, the Institute hosted a major international conference on Alter's 200th yahrzeit (anniversary of his death). The conference brought together scholars from around the world to discuss Alter's impact on Hasidism, Jewish thought, and Polish Jewry.
