Uganda has been plagued by civil war and insurgency for much of its post-independence history. The longest and most devastating of these conflicts was the Ugandan Bush War, which lasted from 1981 to 1986 and claimed the lives of an estimated 500,000 people.
The roots of the Ugandan Bush War can be traced back to the 1971 military coup that brought Idi Amin to power. Amin's regime was characterized by brutality and corruption, and his policies alienated many Ugandans. In 1979, Amin was overthrown by a Tanzanian-led invasion, but the country remained unstable.
In 1981, a group of Ugandan exiles led by Yoweri Museveni launched a guerrilla war against the government. Museveni's National Resistance Army (NRA) quickly gained support from the Ugandan population, which was weary of war and oppression. The NRA eventually defeated the government in 1986, and Museveni became the president of Uganda.
However, the end of the Ugandan Bush War did not bring peace to Uganda. The country continued to be plagued by insurgency, particularly in the north. The Lord's Resistance Army (LRA),a rebel group led by Joseph Kony, waged a brutal campaign of terror against civilians in northern Uganda for over two decades.
The LRA was finally defeated in 2006, but Uganda continues to face security challenges. The country is still recovering from the legacy of the Ugandan Bush War and the LRA insurgency, and it remains vulnerable to future conflict.
